World Ocean Circulation Experiment
[wəːld əʊʃn səːkju'leɪʃn ɪks'perɪment, englisch], Abkürzung
WOCE, internationales ozeanographisches Forschungsunternehmen, das 1990-97 (Feldmessung) und bis 2002 (
Auswertung) weltweit durchgeführt wird; es wird im Rahmen des World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) gefördert vom
International Council for Science (ICSU), vom Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), von der
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (
IOC) und von der
World Meteorological Organization (
WMO). Beteiligt sind in
Deutschland alle wesentlichen physikalischen
Meeresforschung betreibenden Institute (Fahrten mit den Forschungsschiffen
Sonne und
Meteor). WOCE hat zum Ziel, in einem
relativ kurzen Zeitraum einen globalen ozeanographischen
Datensatz mit sehr großer Messgenauigkeit zu erstellen und damit die
Voraussetzung zu schaffen, numerische Klimamodelle zu überprüfen und weiterzuentwickeln, um zukünftige
Klimaänderungen vorhersagen zu können. Zudem werden Bedingungen für weitere internationale Folgeprogramme geschaffen, besonders im Zusammenhang mit dem Global Ocean Observing System (
GOOS).
